(Livestream Replay) Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI: The Essential Features (with Andy Cutler)

ABSTRACT 📄

The integration between the Power BI ecosystem and Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft's cloud data warehousing and big data platform, has been a hot topic recently. Are Power BI and Synapse Analytics the ultimate dream team?

In this session we'll be looking at the features in both Power BI and Synapse Analytics that allow each platform to really shine and provide a holistic data platform to meet any size of data. From Dedicated SQL Pools for large-scale data warehousing, to Data Lake analysis using Serverless SQL Pools, we'll be looking at the features in these services that work well with Power BI.

GUEST BIO 👤

Andy is an Azure Data Platform professional working predominantly with Azure Synapse Analytics (SQL Pools), Data Factory, SQL Server and Power BI. He holds a MSc in Business Intelligence and Data Mining and is a Microsoft Data Platform MVP.

(Livestream Replay) Where to Find Data for your Power BI Practice? - with Roland Szirmai

ABSTRACT 📄

While it’s easy to download the official Advetureworks database from Microsoft to sharpen your Power Query / DAX / Dataviz skills in Power BI, it’s not always the most interesting data. If you truly want to immerse yourself in learning about how to transform less structured data, create measures that reflect more than just YTD Sales or practice how to best place your visuals on the canvas I reckon the most useful data is something that interests you!

In this livestream Roland and I will talk about 3 different examples where data can be found and if needed “created”.

Starting from a more structured, government issued dataset about road accidents in Australia. Then looking at a visitor information based on a shopping center data and visualizing busy areas and periods. And lastly, exploring resident information in a block of building, a dataset that anyone can easily replicate – even without any SQL skills.

Roland will also showcase that in our modern life we can find data everywhere and that could be used in our Power BI learning journey or to showcase some of your skills online or prep for a job interview.

GUEST BIO 👤

Roland Szirmai is an Analyst with 12+ years of experience in Financial, Commercial, and Operational reporting. Roland creates reports to express the true meaning behind numbers in an understandable way using modern tools such as Microsoft Power BI.

He uses his skill, knowledge, and expertise in Excel, Power Query, DAX, and Data Visualisation to help organizations transform from assumptions and guesswork to more informed, data-driven decisions making.

Roland is the creator of BI-Lingual Analytics a YouTube channel and blog dedicated to helping non-technical people learn more about and master Power BI.

People can find useful guides and videos on how to use this tool and sometimes just fun data-related articles. It’s all about helping business users to master Power BI and analytics – without too much IT involved.

(Livestream Replay) Introducing TMDL for Power BI! - with Mathias Thierbach

ABSTRACT 📄

An early look at the Tabular Model Definition Language (TMDL), soon to be released by Microsoft as a public preview as part of the Tabular Object Model (TOM) libraries. TMDL was first presented at SQLBits in March 2023 and is the first of several new innovations and tools targeting the needs of Power BI Pro Developers.

It consists of new declarative format for tabular models, designed for readability and editability, as well as a standardized folder structure for those files (similar to tabular Editor's "Save-to-folder" format), enabling collaborative workflows. Mathias has implemented TMDL as part of the Power BI Contributor Program. He will present the key aspects of the language as well as its main benefits.

GUEST BIO 👤

Mathias is a Data Platform MVP and Head of Finance Systems at YouGov in London. He cares deeply about mature enterprise-grade development and delivery patterns and practices for Power BI. To that end, he has developed pbi-tools, which was released as an open source tool in October 2021. Furthermore,

Mathias has presented his learnings and best practices around Power BI DataOps, CI/CD, and Deployment Automation, but also talks on the organizational and managerial aspects of running a successful Poewr BI team at several international conferences and many user groups.

(Livestream Replay) Report/Dataset Lifecycle Management for Power BI with Greg Baldini

ABSTRACT 📄

Everyone is familiar with the NASA countdown. T-minus-10, 9, 8... Anyone who has ever built a Power BI report knows how to publish that report. But ground control has a lot of work to do after liftoff. And a Power BI pro's work does not stop after they hit the 'Publish' button. The name for that work is operations. As Power BI matures, it is critical that we spend time and effort on operations. This work comprises monitoring, maintenance, user support, ongoing development, and change management among other things. Let's kick start the conversation around Power BI operations:
• What to do
• Out of the box features
• Tools you can build and buy to support operations in your organization

GUEST BIO 👤

He slices! He dices! When it comes to Power BI, Greg Baldini does it all, and he is here to show you how to, too!
Co-founder of Argus PBI, Greg has a decade of experience with DAX, Tabular, and the Power BI family of tools. His career has been spent in solving hard problems for clients and seeking deep understanding of the fundamentals of data analysis.
