(Livestream Replay) Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI: The Essential Features (with Andy Cutler)

ABSTRACT 📄

The integration between the Power BI ecosystem and Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft's cloud data warehousing and big data platform, has been a hot topic recently. Are Power BI and Synapse Analytics the ultimate dream team?

In this session we'll be looking at the features in both Power BI and Synapse Analytics that allow each platform to really shine and provide a holistic data platform to meet any size of data. From Dedicated SQL Pools for large-scale data warehousing, to Data Lake analysis using Serverless SQL Pools, we'll be looking at the features in these services that work well with Power BI.

GUEST BIO 👤

Andy is an Azure Data Platform professional working predominantly with Azure Synapse Analytics (SQL Pools), Data Factory, SQL Server and Power BI. He holds a MSc in Business Intelligence and Data Mining and is a Microsoft Data Platform MVP.

(Livestream Replay) Where to Find Data for your Power BI Practice? - with Roland Szirmai

ABSTRACT 📄

While it’s easy to download the official Advetureworks database from Microsoft to sharpen your Power Query / DAX / Dataviz skills in Power BI, it’s not always the most interesting data. If you truly want to immerse yourself in learning about how to transform less structured data, create measures that reflect more than just YTD Sales or practice how to best place your visuals on the canvas I reckon the most useful data is something that interests you!

In this livestream Roland and I will talk about 3 different examples where data can be found and if needed “created”.

Starting from a more structured, government issued dataset about road accidents in Australia. Then looking at a visitor information based on a shopping center data and visualizing busy areas and periods. And lastly, exploring resident information in a block of building, a dataset that anyone can easily replicate – even without any SQL skills.

Roland will also showcase that in our modern life we can find data everywhere and that could be used in our Power BI learning journey or to showcase some of your skills online or prep for a job interview.

GUEST BIO 👤

Roland Szirmai is an Analyst with 12+ years of experience in Financial, Commercial, and Operational reporting. Roland creates reports to express the true meaning behind numbers in an understandable way using modern tools such as Microsoft Power BI.

He uses his skill, knowledge, and expertise in Excel, Power Query, DAX, and Data Visualisation to help organizations transform from assumptions and guesswork to more informed, data-driven decisions making.

Roland is the creator of BI-Lingual Analytics a YouTube channel and blog dedicated to helping non-technical people learn more about and master Power BI.

People can find useful guides and videos on how to use this tool and sometimes just fun data-related articles. It’s all about helping business users to master Power BI and analytics – without too much IT involved.

Hiding Measures from [DAX] Intellisense!

Video by: Reid Havens

When creating datasets with build permissions (shared datasets), many of us know to hide fields from the data pane. But did you know you can also "hide" measures from the intellisense list in DAX? In this video learn how to use tabular to configure a table property to hide any measures inside of that table, from any DAX intellisense when writing measures. Further increasing usability when creating shared datasets in the Power BI service!

PLEASE NOTE this is not (officially supported) by Microsoft. But is a relatively safe setting to modify. Just be aware Microsoft doesn't provide support for this. More info below at the tabular editor link

(Livestream Replay) Power BI Governance (Why Should I Care) - with "Ásgeir Gunnarsson"

ABSTRACT 📄

For many the mention of governance gives them images of massive effort and inconvenience for themselves and end-users. It´s a hindrance and waste of time. But it doesn´t have to be that way. Yes, governance is an ongoing effort that doesn´t end and yes depending on industry it might get complicated but getting started and getting far can be done in as little as few weeks. In this session we will talk about how we can start to tackle Power BI governance. We will look at a few things you can get started with very quickly that will get you far in setting up your governance strategy.

Power BI developers and consumers are normally only on the receiving end of governance decisions. But they should care, and they should understand it if they want to influence the process. If you know what it´s about and, at least, how it works in broad terms, you can influence it. If your admins turn a feature off or limit what you can do, know exactly what it means might help you understand why or influence them to change it (if it´s the wrong decision).

We will look at the main components of a Power BI governance strategy, what they mean and why Power BI developers should care.
